Dr Gitlow's makes some excellent comments about those who will "gain" from implementatin of the EMR. Certainly a whole new industry will expand at some considerable expense to the health system. On the flip side, there will be savings, not all measurable in dollars. An EMR will never make a mediocre physician better, and a properly designed EMR must enhance the provider-patient interaction, not interfere with it, as most physicians state. The user interface continues to improve with PC tablets, handhelds, and point and click driven systems. We are only at the beginning of defining inventive provider interfaces with EMRs. Keyboard input is a big drawback, and distracts from the physician-patient interface. Voice recognition continues to improve. Perhaps a "white coat" interface built into the sleeves of the provider's coat will allow data entry without distraction as the doctor stands or sits, arms folded as he listens to, or talks to his patient. As the Coordinator for a large RHIO I compare these developments to the telephone where we went from clicking the handle to a rotary dial and then push buttons. RHIOs stand little chance of success without the end user interface, and vice-versa...no one is going to buy "telephones" without being able to make a call or connect to someone else.

Dr. Gitlow forgets about the ancillary HC professionals and support people overwhelmed with the disorganization and general sloppiness of non-EMR practices. Pity the pharmacist overwhelmed with calls and struggling to read illegible scripts. What about the poor nurse who can't find the chart, or can't read it when she does? Most doc's equipped with a decent EHR would never give it up and go back to paper. Just ask around.

Can Doctors Learn to Love EMRs? YES, IF:

So many people engaged in this discussion started by Matthew Holt, that I felt obliged to say something and make it sound important.
My favorite follow up is by Bob Coffield of Health Care Law Blog. Bob gets to the heart of the matter by teasing
