Increased technological ownership over medical information placed in the hands of patients, over and above legislated ownership, holds forth the promise of breaking up the political controversies in the United States centering on the sharing of information sharing. New choices are necessary for people to granularly bank and permit use of or access to their medical information, not unlike how they have long banked and permitted use of or access to their money. The granulation of data objects (i.e., medical records) into the data elements comprising those objects (i.e., social security numbers, birth dates, physician’s notes, etc.) is necessary in order to support the efficiency and low cost of an on-demand medical information bank servicing its customers as a Web service.
